Motors Flashcards
What is a shunt wound motor?
A motor where the field is parallel with armature.
What are the three different classifications of D.C. Motors?
Series, shunt, compound.
What is a series wound motor?
A motor where the field is in series with the armature.
What is a compound wound motor?
A motor where part of the field is in series and part of the field is in parallel.
How is D.C. Motor control obtained?
By controlling the flux field
How is speed control in a D.C. Motor obtained?
By controlling the strength of the flux field
How is direction controlled in a D.C. Motor?
It is controlled by reversing the polarity of the flux field, while the magnetic polarity of the armature remains the same.
What are two methods of controlling direction in a D.C Motor?
Use a single pole, double throw switch to route current through one of two different windings
Use a double pole, double throw switch to reverse current flow through a single field, while current through the armature remains the same.
What are the different types of AC motors?
Universal, induction, synchronous,
What is an advantage of a universal motor?
High torque, very versatile
What is a disadvantage of a universal motor?
Loss of efficiency when used with AC, and is higher maintenance.
