What is the articulator?
mechanical device that represents the temporomandibular joint and jaw members to which the maxillary and mandibular casts may be attached
What does the articulator simulate?

What is the purpose of the articulator?
MOST IMPORTANT: to relate the mandibular cast to the maxillary cast
Others:
- acts as patient in their absences
- excellent tool for patient presentation
- tool for partial/full dentures
- fabrication of occlusal surfaces for indirect restorations
What are some advantages of an articulator?
- patient presence not needed
- decreases chair time during restorations
- no cheeks/saliva/tongue in your way
- can visualize patient occlusion
What is occlusion?
Static relationship between incising or masticating surfaces of maxillary/mandibular teeth
What is maximum intercuspation?
Closed and complete interdigiting of mandibular and maxillary teeth
What are the types of articulators?
- ARCON (articulating condyle)
- Non-ARCON (non-articulating condyle)

What must you remember about magnetic mounts in the articulator?
The flat back goes towards the back of the articulator
What are the notches in the base of the casts for?
If the mounting stone comes off, it is easy to see where to place the cast back on

Why do you wet the cast before placing mounting stone on it?
To make sure the mounting stone sticks
How much do you want your occlusal reduction?
1.0 - 1.5 mm
