What is statistics?
a science of collecting, organizing, presenting, analyzing, and interpreting data to assist in making more effective decisions
2 types of statistics:
Descriptive and Inferential
Population:
entire set of individuals or objects of interest
Sample:
portion of the population
Parameter:
numerical measure of a population
Statistic:
numerical measure of a sample
Sampling error:
difference between a parameter and a statistic
2 types of data:
Qualitative and Quantitative
2 types of Qualitative data:
Nominal and Ordinal
Qualitative:
records an attribute or category
Quantitative:
results from a count or measure
Qualitative Nominal:
distinct categories
Ex: Gender (M/F), College major, color of hair, marital status
doesn’t matter the order in which the categories are presented!
Qualitative Ordinal:
categories that have an implied ordering
does matter the order in which the categories are presented!
Ex: Size high school (1A, 2A..), Ratings (below avg, avg, etc.), Letter grade (A, B, C), Economic status (poor, mid, upper), Education level (high school, college, grad school)
Quantitative Discrete:
usually counting something (data in numbers)
finite set of values with gaps in between
Ex: Age groups (18-21), # of kids in a family, # of employees in a company, days in a week
Quantitative Continuous:
typically measuring something
theoretically infinite number of possible values
Ex: weight, height, GPA, Age, vehical speed, truck weight, time required to complete a project
