Johann Goethe
Greatest German writer of his time. Faust is his major work. Sorrows of young Werther, Egmont. He wrote many poems and became, along with Shakespeare, the main source for texts for the nineteenth century. He knew Beethoven and the young Mendelssohn. Beethoven greatly idolized him.
Thomas de Quincey
English writer, essayist, and literary critic, best known for his Confessions of an English Opium-Eater (1821).
Harriet Smithson
Married Berlioz in 1833. Symphonie Fantastique was somewhat an autobiographical reflection of Berlioz’ spurned love for her.
Clara Wieck
German concert pianist. Child prodigy who toured Europe at 9 as a pianist and composer. Highly praised as a pianist but not as a composer because she was a woman. She married Robert Schumman.
Fanny Mendelhson
German pianist and composer. Felix Mendelhson’s sister. One of the first female composers to get their work published.
John Field
Irish pianist and composer who invented the nocturne. (A composition inspired by, or evocative of, the night)
Paganini
A great Italian virtuoso on the violin, viola and guitar who dazzled the audience. Liszt was widely influenced by him.
