Communication is a process, which means it is ongoing and always in motion. Communication is also systematic, which means it occurs with a system of interrelated parts that affect one another.

The content level of communication is he literal message. The relationship level of meaning expresses the relationship between communicators.

The major shortcoming of linear models is that they portrayed communication as flowing in one direction, leaving out feedback.
How do transactional communication models improve on prior models?
Limitations of interactive models is that they don’t acknowledge that everyone in communication send and receives messages, often simultaneously. Also fail to capture dynamism of communication (where it changes of time as a result of interaction).

What is a symbol? What does it mean to say symbols are arbitrary? Ambiguous? Abstract?
Symbols represent phenomena. Arbitrary as they are not intrinsically connected to what they represent. Ambiguous, as their meanings aren’t clear cut or fixed. Abstract, as they are not concrete or tangible.
What are implications of the principle that interpretation creates meaning?
Because the meanings of symbols aren’t self-evident or absolute we have to interpret them.
What are the two types of rules that guide communication?
Regulative rules specify when, how, where and with whom to talk about certain things.
Constitutive rules define what communication means by telling us how to count certain kinds of communication. What counts of being respectful in different scenarios.
What does it mean to say that punctuation affects meaning?
Punctuation is the mental mark of the beginnings and endings of particular interpretations.
What is involved in dual perspective? How does it enhance communication?
Dual perspective involves taking another persons point of view into account.
I language or you language
You language is accusatory, use I language to explain your own feelings.
Nonverbal communication and verbal, similarities and differences.
Similar, both symbolic and guided by constitutive and regulative rules.
Different, nonverbal is more honest and continuous.
What relational-level meanings does nonverbal communication establish?
Responsiveness, liking and power.
What is meant by kinesics? Haptics? Proxemics? Chronemics?
Kinesics is body position and body motions. Haptics is physical touch. Proxemics is space and how we use it. Chronemics is how we perceive and use time.

We can’t attach meanings of a particular behaviour to specific people in specific contexts.
How are personal relationships defined.
Defined by uniqueness, rules, relational dialectics, and commitment and affected by contexts.

Opposing forces or tensions part of all relationships. Includes autonomy/connection, novelty/predictability, openness/closedness.
