Quiz 1 Flashcards
What are the five major organ systems?
Cardiovascular System Digestive System Skeletal System Nervous System Lymphatic System
What is the function of the Cardiovascular System?
Circulates nutrients and oxygen to the rest of the body.
What is the function of the digestive system?
Absorbs nutrients and gets rid of waste.
What is the function of the skeletal system?
Provides structural support and undergoes hematopoesis to make new blood cells.
What is the function of the nervous system?
Sends signals to the rest of the body to make it move.
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
Functions in the immune system and aids in blood flow.
What are the four major body cavities?
Cranial
Vertebral Canal
Thoracic
Abdominopelvic
What is the function of the cranial body cavity?
Protects the brain.
What is the function of the vertebral canal?
Protects the spine and spinal cord
What is the function of the thoracic cavity?
Isolates the lungs from the rest of the body. Creates a specific pressure inside that is required for the lungs to function properly.
What is the function of the abdominopelvic cavity?
Houses many organs of the digestive and reproductive system.
What is the function of the plasmalemma?
Isolates the interior of the cell from the exterior. Works in passive and active diffusion.
What is the cytoplasm?
Everything inside the cell including nonmembranous and membranous organelles.
What is the cytosol?
Mostly water and high concentrations of ions.
What is the difference between the cytoplasm and cytosol?
The cytoplasm includes the organelles in the cell along with everything else. The cytosol is just the liquid in the cell.
What is the function of the cytoskeleton?
It is the cells framework.
What are microfilaments and what is their function in the cell?
They are made of actin and anchor the cytoskeleton to integral proteins.
What are intermediate filaments function in the cell?
They provide strength for the cell, stabilize organelle position, and transport materials within the cytosol.
What is the function of microtubules in the cell?
Made of tubulin, they are the primary component of the cytoskeleton. They control the cells shape and aid in cell division and movement.
What is the function of centrioles?
They aid in cell division using microtubules.
What is the function of cilia?
They aid in cell movement, like flagella.
What is the function of ribosomes?
They make proteins.
