What is Regression to the mean?
Regression toward the mean is the phenomenon that if a variable is extreme on its first measurement, it will tend to be closer to the average on its second measurement—and if it is extreme on its second measurement, it will tend to have been closer to the average on its first. For example, the higher the IQ score the more likely that his composite scores would be lower because it is heading toward the mean. In contrast to a person with an IQ of 75, his scores would be higher because it is trying to head towards the mean.
What are the methods for diagnosing LD
There are 3 methods for diagnosing a LD. The first is the Ability-Achievement Discrepancy. The second is Research-Based (e.g., Patterns of strengths and weaknesses (PSW), and the third is the Response to Intervention.
What are the IDEA LD categories?
- Multiple Disabilities
- Orthopedic Impairment
- Other Health Impairment (OHI)
- Speech/Language Impairment
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Visual Impairment (including blindness)
- Autism
- Deaf-Blindness
- Deafness
- Emotional Disturbance
- Hearing Impairment
- Intellectual Disability
What are the IDEA Regulations?
Oral expression,
Listening comprehension, Written expression, Basic reading skills, Reading fluency skills,
Reading comprehension, Mathematics calculation, Mathematics problem solving
What are the core subtests for the KTEA?
The core subtests for the KTEA are Reading, Reading fluency, Mathematics, Writing, Oral language, and Language processing.
What is the discrepancy method?
The discrepancy method is looking at the discrepancy between estimated intellectual potential and actual level of performance. A discrepancy between IQ and achievement implies that there is an unexpected underachievement.
How many discrepancy methods are there?
- Standard/strict discrepancy 18 or 22 points
2. Regression model
What is Response to Intervention (RTI)?
The RTI is a Multi-tiered approach to the early identification of students with academic or behavioral difficulties.
What are the 3 tiers of RTI?
Tier I:
Afterschool tutoring (voluntary)
Evaluate after 6 weeks
Tier II:
Small group math intervention (daily during math class, along with two to three other students) Evaluate after 6-12 weeks
Tier III:
Referral for evaluation to determine why he has not responded to intervention efforts, and if he might be a student with a learning disability in math
What is the WIAT III composed of?
Oral language, Total Reading, Basic Reading, Reading comprehension and Fluency, Written Expression, Mathematics, and Math Fluency.
What does Math Fluency measure on the WIAT?
The math fluency is made up of math fluency such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication and it is measuring the accuracy of a student’s math.
What does the Letter word Identification in the WJ measure?
The letter word Identification measures the examines word identification skills and a reading writing ability
What does Applied problems in the WJ measure?
The applied problem measures a person’s ability to solve math problems and quantitative knowledge.
