Quiz 1 Flashcards
Indirect hypothesis
You cannot see it happen b/c you cannot see it (too small) or it has already happened (driven by predictions on things we know)
Null hypothesis (Ho)
No, effect, difference, or relationship between studied variables.
- idea that there is no real change
Alternative hypothesis (HA)
The hypothesis we actually test
P-value
Probability of committing a type 1 error if null is rejected. You want this number to be as small as possible (between 0-1)
Statistical test
Is performed to determined probability
Test statistic
Value calculated from the data that describes how reliably different the samples from eachother are
Probability distribution
If you take 2 groups of numbers and randomly pull, what would the distribution of numbers look like
Alpha
The maximum acceptable risk of making a type 1 error
Significant
Likely to be real
- at least 95%
Two-tailed hypothesis
Could be positive or negative
- specifies direction
