What are the primary responsibilities of the professional responder?
Ensure your safety

What are principles and preferences in relation to the healthcare model?
Principles are the necessary objectives you MUST do for patient improvement and survival
Preferences are HOW the principle is achieved with the provider/skills available
What is the golden period of trauma care?
If a patient can receive advanced medical treatment within 1 hour of trauma, they have a much higher rate of survival
What are all the positions of an emergency health care team?
Charge person: Usually the person with the highest first aid ability; initiates EMS, assesses patient, manages injury
Assistant: Anyone appointed by the charge person. Assists in assessing injury and anything else charge person tells them to do
Control person: Appointed for crowd control/gathering equipment
Call person: Calls EMS, reports back to charge person
What are the differences between Critical Incident Stress (CIS) and PTSD?
CIS is acute - S/S usually appear right after the event
S/S might not last long
PTSD is chronic - symptoms last over one month, but may take months or years to even show up
S/S are much longer lasting
At what age can a person in BC make their own medical decisions?
No age limit - a minor can make their own decisions if the healthcare practitioner deems them mature enough to understand the decision they are making and the repercussions of it
What individuals are classified for implied consent?
Unresponsive
Intoxicated
Under the influence of drugs
Confused/delirious
Mentally ill
Developmentally delayed
Seriously ill or injured
Unattended minors in need of emergency care
What to do if a patient refuses care?
Honour the request
Emphasize need for care
Repeat offer for help
Call EMS/police
Have refusal witnessed - protect against legal trouble in the future
Follow protocol for refusal of care
Document refusal of care
Don’t leave them alone!
When to end care of a patient?
Only stop care when someone with greater training takes over
