Quiz 1 Flashcards
Cell Functions
Metabolism
Protein Synthesis
Immune Response and Wound Healing
Respiration
Cell Movement and communication
Producing blood cells
Cell Reproduction; Mitosis and Meiosis
Mitosis
2 New Identical Cells
Meiosis
4 gamete cells
Prokaryotes
no Mem-bound organelles or nucleus, small. mostly bacteriaesque
Eukaryotes
organelles, big (10-1000uM), plants and animals
Model organisms (and traits)
researchers use these in experiments. rapid reproduction, short gestation, short maturity period, large number of offspring, easy maintenance, high genome knowledge. often related to human genome
cell culture
cells contained in a culture
tissue extraction
removing tissue of an organism to create a primary cell culture. is direct, but limited cell count
cell line
finite number of cells, wonโt divide further. usually in triplicate
continuous cell line
indefinite number, continues to divide. ABNORMAL, but infinite. found in Cancer cells, Embryo Blastocysts, and adult bone marrow stem cells.
Embryo blastocysts
made of Inner Cell Mass, becomes most of the embryo. cells divide, and are considered stem cells.
Microscopy
visualize objects and structures in cells with magnification and resolution enhancement
Light microscopy
light is the source of energy for the magnification and resolution.
Bright Field
lowest resolution, general shape of cell shown. usually fixed cells
Phase Contrast
second lowest resolution, displays shape and some density of object.
