Quiz 03/26 Flashcards
1
Q
What is Ego Theory?
A
We are a single continuous self who has experiences
- consistent with religious or spiritual notions of a soul
- consistent with the substance dualism idea that the nonphysical mind is an experiencing self
2
Q
What is Bundle Theory?
A
Our consciousness as an experiencing self is an illusion
- consistent with some religious ideas such as Buddhism - there is no ego, no fixed entity of self,
- we are a moving bundle of experiences that we call self
3
Q
What is Neuronal adequacy?
A
a sufficient physical condition for the associated conscious sensation
- takes a certain amount of time after the beginning of the stimulation before there occurs “neuronal adequacy”
- the 500 ms time between the start of the stimulus being applied and conscious experience occurring of the stimulus.
4
Q
What is subjective referral?
A
sensations experienced at a time of stimulation, but only if neuronal adequacy is achieved after some time on sensation
- consciousness actually happens after neuronal adequacy is achieved, but feels like it happened at S pulse time (time the stimulation occurred)
- conscious experience of time is delayed relative to objective time
- demonstrated that consciousness comes after we have decided to act
- slow onset of consciousness suggest it does not/cannot cause our actions
5
Q
How does the “Self” in bundle theory appear continuous?
A
the “self” is a sequence of unified neurocognitive states that exist moment to moment like pearls on a string
- the important framework that we call self is just a series of bundles of experiences
