What is quinsy?
Peritonsillar abscess, also known as quinsy, is a serious complication of tonsillitis that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment
It is a collection of pus in the tissue surrounding the tonsils, usually caused by bacterial infection.
What are the 4 main features of quinsy?
- Severe throat pain, which lateralises to one side
- Deviation of the uvula to the unaffected side
- Trismus (difficulty opening the mouth)
- Reduced neck mobility.
What would physical examination reveal in quinsy?
Physical examination may reveal a swollen and erythematous tonsil, deviation of the uvula, and a fluctuant mass in the peritonsillar area.
How is diagnosis confirmed?
Diagnosis is confirmed by needle aspiration or imaging studies
How is quinsy treated?
Treatment involves drainage of the abscess, usually by needle aspiration or incision and drainage, along with antibiotics

- Airway obstruction
- Sepsis
- Lemierre’s syndrome
what is considered to prevent reoccurence?
tonsillectomy should be considered to prevent recurrence
