Quimester 1 Study Guide Questions Flashcards
Be able to compare and contrast the scientific method with the engineering design process
Scientists inquire about natural phenomena, explore the natural world and discover new knowledge about our universe
Engineers apply scientific knowledge to solve problems, consider cost, efficiency, other parameters, while attempting to design a solution
What should you put in a data table
Data tables show the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. It should have title, labels, units, organized, data.
What should you put in a graph
They make complicated information easy to understand.
It should include title, x axis, y axis, legend/key, data
Where to put the information in a graph
Independent, variable goes in the x axis. Dependent variable in the y axis
When to use each type of graph
Line graph: used to track changes over a period of time or amounts of something.
Bar graph: used to compare things between different groups
Pie graph: used when you are trying to compare parts of a whole
Energy
The ability to do work. Measured in
Force
A push or pull on an object resulting from an interaction wtih another object (person)
Force=mass x acceleration
Measured in newtons
Work
Transfer of energy
Work= force(N) x distance(m)
Measured in joules
List and summarize each of the steps of the scientific method.
1) state the problem or ask a question. A problem is something you want to solve, a question is something you want the answer to. 2) gather info. It is important to have some background information about the topic. 3) form a hypothesis. An educated guess or prediction about the answer to you question or problem. 4) perform experiment. 5) collect and analyze data. Make a chart or graph. 6) draw conclusions
