COPD: smoking (mainly) + environment

Asthma: trials of therapy/history taking/lung function

Prognosis?
Asthma: symptoms can be well controlled
COPD: symptoms deteriorate over time
Treatment?
Asthma: SABA/SAMA + ICS w/add-on agents if necessary
COPD: SABA/SAMA + high dose ICS for more severe
Type of airway inflammation?
Asthma: eosinphilic (mainly)
COPD: neutrophilic (mainly but eosinophilic seen w/exacerbations)
Airflow limitation?
Asthma: variable airflow obstruction
COPD: Progressively worse
Productive cough seen?
Asthma: common
COPD: uncommon
Night time waking/wheeze?
Asthma: common
