Religious market theory critques secularisation theory, which is eurocentric, as it fails to explain religions continuing vitality in America and elsewhere. There wasn’t a golden age of religion and not everyone will be an atheist. It is one sided because it sees a decline, but ignores the growth of new religions and religious revivals.

Religion is attractive as it provides us with compensators when real awards are unattainable. This encourages competition, to be answerable to consumers. This explains why in the USA, religion is strong as demand increases when there is choice. Allowing to meet needs of consumers. This is contrasted with religious monopolies ( CofE), has led to decline.

Norris and Ingelhart ( 2011) show that high levels of religious participating exists in catholic countries where the church has a near monopoly, such as Ireland. By contrast, countries with religious pluralism, such Holland, who have low levels of participation. There is contradiction. May suggest existential theory is correct.

E.g. online religion and religion online. This helps to explain the falling decline in church attendance.
