Questions Flashcards
what equation is used to find the magnification?
mag = image size / real size
what equation is used to find the real size?
real size = image size / magnification
what equation is used to find the image size?
image size = mag x real size
Where are embryonic stem cells found?
in embryos
what are embryonic stem cells?
pluripotent
where are adult stem cells located?
bone marrow, brain and muscle tissue
what are adult cells?
multipotent
what are the pros of of producing cloned plants from stem cells?
- can help illnesses and medical conditions
2. the embryos are spare form IVF so they would be destroyed anyways.
what are the cons of producing cloned plants form stem cells?
- embryos can become babies
- virus in the cell can be passed on
- It is very expensive so it could be used on better things
- Religious/Ethical issues
what are the growing areas of a plant called?
Meristems
why are stem cells cloned?
- Another plant life
- Endangered plants can be reproduced
- Grow more food
what other places can stem cells be retrieved?
fat, blood and umbilical cord
what is ONE medical condition that can be treated by stem cells?
diabetes
what do cells need to be alive?
oxygen, glucose and water
Oxygen and Glucose goes…
IN
Carbon Dioxide goes…
OUT
Oxygen =
blood
Carbon Dioxide = Blood =
lungs
Glucose = small intestine =
blood
Where does active transport occur?
- Inside the gut for animals
- Root hair cells for plants
why do plants need mineral ions?
for healthy growth
TWO ways in which active transport differs from diffusion?
- Active transport is from a low to high concentration area wether diffusion is from a high to low area of concentration.
- Active Transport uses energy.
what do specialised exchange surfaces do?
A specialised exchange surface gives a greater area, so more oxygen can be absorbed and more carbon dioxide can be removed.
if there is a high surface area, will it be easier for stuff to move between an organism and its environment?
Yes
