Define an atom?
The smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist
Describe the 3 subatomic particles, where they are found, their relative mass and their charges?
Protons (P), Neutrons (N), Electrons (E)
(P) - Found in nucleus, relative mass is 1, charge is +1
(N) - Found in nucleus, relative mass is 1, charge is 0
(E) - Found in the shells, relative mass is 0, charge is -1
Explain what information is revealed by the atomic number and mass number of the atoms on the periodic table?
Atomic Number = How many protons
Atomic mass = Protons + neutrons
Number of electrons=Number of protons
Number of neutrons= The mass number - atomic number
Explain what the atoms in each GROUP of the periodic table have in common?
Each column of the periodic table have the same valencies.
What is in an atom?
Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons
Explain the ‘aim’ of all atoms with reference to losing and gaining electrons
The life goal of an atom is to have a full Valence shell
Explain what an ion is AND give an example?
*Be able to DRAW the formation of an ion
(make sure you know how to draw the formation of an ion)
An ion is an atom or molecule with a net electric charge, due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
Explain what VALENCY means?
A measure of combining powers with other atoms when it forms chemical compounds or molecules.
Explain the concept of Ionic Bonding AND show using a diagram how it occurs
Transfer of valence electrons between an atom (we suggest finding a diagram of your own)
Explain the concept of Covalent Bonding AND show using a diagram how it occurs
Different to iconic bonding; Covalent bonding- a chemical bond formed when electrons are shared between two atoms. Usually each atom contributes one electron to form a pair of electrons that are shared by both atoms.
What is the difference between a Cation and an Anion
Cations have a net positive charge (cats have paws - p = positive)
Anions have a net negative charge
