Purposes of internal communication include provide information, gather information, share ideas, clarify issues, get to know people, persuasion.
Purposes of external communication
The main purposes of external communication include improve customer service, public relations, confirm arrangements, give instructions, provide information.
Written communication —Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages:
- permanent record of message
- messages can convey authority
- information easily distributed to wide audience.
Disadvantage:
- feedback is slower or difficult to receive
- preparation is time consuming
- forgery is possible

Planning- attending board meetings, writing documents, speaking at functions.
Organising- meet with subordinates, writing/answering letters, emails, phone calls.
Leading- conducting presentations, meet with subordinates, negotiating and bargaining face to face.
Controlling- conducting review sessions, writing reports, speaking to outsiders.
