Questions Flashcards
How can you ask a question in French?
You can use a declarative sentence with a rising intonation, ‘est-ce que’ (usually before yes or no questions), or inversion
When can inversion be used?
Inversion can be used when the subject is a pronoun
Give me an example (Are you in the class)?
Es-tu dans la class?
What happens if the verb ends in a vowel?
If the verb ends with a vowel, a -t- must be inserted between the verb and the pronouns il, elle, and on
Give me an example (Does she have a computer)?
A-t-elle un ordinateur?
What happens if the subject is a noun?
If the subject is a noun, the noun remains before the verb, but the subject pronoun of the same gender and number as the noun is added after the verb
Give me an example (Are the curtains green?)
Les rideaux sont-ils verts?
What can inversions sometimes be used with?
Questions with inversions can sometimes begin with an interrogative adverb such as où (where) or d’où (from where).
Give me an example (Where does he eat?)
Où mange-t-il?
What’s an alternative construction with où without using inversion?
An alternative construction is often used when the subject is a noun and the verb is être → où + être + noun subject
Give me an example (Where is the professor)?
Où est le professeur?
