Practical Advantages;
Quick&Cheap; easy to gain large amounts of data.
Easy to Quantify- Can be processed quickly due to use of closed questions.
Ethical Advantages;
Anonymity&Confidentiality; Obligation to be kept secret, respect right to privacy.
Legality; Rarely involve anything illegal.
Theoretical Advantages;
Reliability- produce similar results if you were to repeat.
Representative- Large Sample Size means you can generalise data .
Detachment- No sociologist influence.
Practical Disadvantages;
Language Barriers; use of complex words may lead to misinterpretation, affects validity.
Lack of Response- cant be bothered sending it back.
Money- offer incentives to complete the questionaire.
Ethical Disadvantages;
Sensitive Data
Theoretical Disadvantages;
Low Response Rate- unrepresentative data.
Right Answerism- Try to impress the sociologist as and have the ‘correct answer’
Study involving low response rates;
Hite 1991; ‘Love,Passion&Emotional Violence’
-sent 100,000 out and only got 4.5% response rate
