A

(step 1) The woman’s problem is that she has been accepted to her top-choice school, but it didn’t offer her enough financial aid, so she doesn’t know what to do.

(step 2) The students discuss two solutions.

(step 3) First, apply for scholarships to pay for her university.

(step 4) Second, attend a different school that will offer her more financial aid.

(step 5) If I were the woman, I would choose the second solution.

(step 6) The first isn’t very good because even though she has the grades for the scholarships as the woman said, she doesn’t have the time to apply them because of her finals.

(step 7) The second solution is better because even though the other universities may not have the best professors in her field as the woman said, she has been accepted to other good universities that offered her enough financial aid, so this way she can avoid the stress of finding more money.

(step 8) That’s why I would choose the second solution.

Q

Shake Up!

A

Important Tip: If you don’t hear the two solutions presented in the conversation, create your own and support it with two reasons. You won’t get a top score, but you’ll get a higher score than you would if you just sat there and said nothing. Also, if you don’t hear any of the responses to the solutions (because you didn’t hear them or the conversation didn’t have them), you can still do well. Create your own support for your opinion, just as you did for questions one and two of the speaking section

Master 3 Tip!

A

1) Add your own sentence if you have time.
2) Drop the “even though” statement for the 2nd solution if you have less than 20 seconds on your timer to explain why the 2nd solution is good.
3) Play with the structure and add emotion.

Let’s bring back the perfect example and look at it one more time to ensure that you show the graders beyond any doubt that you deserve a top score by seeing how we did 1). Here is the sentence that we added.

so this way she can avoid the stress of finding more money.

Always do the same if you have time, don’t finish early. Below is a recording that explains 3), a critical point because graders may be suffering from structure burnout.
