Question 5 Flashcards
1
Q
what are the strengths of the psychodynamic approach ?
A
- nature and nurture (adult personality = innate drives + childhood experiences)
- usefulness (childhood experiences shape us and critical to development
> helps to understand mental health issues and how they could be to do with childhood or unconscious conflict
2
Q
what are weaknesses of this approach?
A
- reductionist (oversimplification of tripartite personality and psychosexual stages)
- deterministic (doesn’t allow free will, insinuates our future is already shaped)
> realistically we can change the way we behave if we wanted to
