Question 2 - Theories Flashcards
Theories
Multidimensional Theory - Anxiety
Theory of anxiety
Negative linear relationship shows cognitive anxiety. As Anxiety increases performances decreases.
Somatic Anxiety - Some is good, An inverted U theory relationship, optimal level of performances occurs when somatic anxiety is at a moderate level. Too much will cause a decrease in performance.
Inverted U Theory - Arousal
Increases in arousal causes an increase in performance up to an optimal point.
At the optimal point, the performer will give a maximal level of performance.
Beyond that point, performance gradually deteriorates.
Catastrophe Theory
Arousal simply becomes too high for the performer to cope with.
Performance is uncoordinated and more out of control than normal.
Shock at how bad the performance is may increase anxiety and further.
Individual Zone of Optimal Functioning (IZOF)
Related to athletes being in there ‘flow state’ which it is proposed and requires different levels of arousal for each individual.
LOW ZOF - best performance (in zone)
MOD ZOF - out of zone - in zone best performance - out of zone
HIGH ZOF - out of zone - in zone best performance
