Question 2 delen Flashcards
Question 2:
A researcher is interested in understanding the predictors of women’s attitudes towards drug
use for mental health problems. She thought that women’s attitudes would be predicted by the
current mental health issues of women. Specifically, she hypothesized that women who
display higher levels of mental and physical health symptoms would be more positive towards using medication to treat mental health problems. She wants to test her idea using the data recorded in the ReExamSpring2023.sav.
In her analysis, she wants to control for the role of women’s employment status and their
prior use of psychotropic drugs. Her goal is to estimate the amount of variations explained by
the current mental and physical health symptoms in the attitudes towards drug use, controlling
for employment status and prior use of psychotropic drugs.
Question 2a. What kind of statistical model she should use to answer this research question?
Briefly describe this method and compare it to the multiple linear regression model? What are
the main advantages of this analysis approach over the multiple linear regression model?

Question 2b. Consider the analysis method you suggested above (2a), how the predictor and
outcome variables should be measured? What kind of variables could be used in such
models as predictor and outcome? What are the key assumptions regarding the predictor
variables?
Question 3:
The researcher thought that women’s attitudes towards use of drugs to treat mental health
problems could be influenced by two key factors: their current mental health symptoms and
education level. She hypothesized that women with higher education may be more willing to
use medication to treat mental health problems when they suffer from mental health issues.
On the other hand, she expected that women who suffer from mental health issues would be
less willing to use medicine if they have lower education.
Nevertheless, her data do not include information on women’s education. However, she has
data on the participants’ current employment status. She decided to use employment status as
a proxy (a closely related variable) for education level given that several studies reported a
strong positive correlation between women’s education and employment status. Thus, she
revised her hypothesis. She stated: “Employed women would be more willing to use
medication when they suffer from mental health issues than the unemployed women.
Question 3a. What kind of analysis does she need to use to test her research question?
Explain this analysis method briefly?
Question 3:

Question 3b. Explain how the three variables that this researcher was interested in should be
interrelated to each other to assume that her hypothesis was supported.
What type of analysis should Dr. Melman use? Explain the basic assumptions of this
analysis regarding the associations among the predictor variables. Explain the consequences
of violation of this assumption (5 points).
She should conduct two hierarchical regression analysis, one for external and one for internal motivation.
The basic assumption of the predictor variables in multiple regression is that they
should not be too highly correlated (although some correlation is usually to be expected).
Too much correlation between predictor variables lead to multicollinearity issues,
meaning the results of the unique effects of the variables cannot be correctly calculated.
