Question 2 Flashcards
Multidimensional theory (anxiety)
The theory that there is a series of two- dimensional relationships between cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, self confidence and performance.
Inverted U theory (arousal)
Increased arousal causes an increase in performance up to the optimum point, beyond there performance deteriorates. Under arousal also causes poor performance.
Catastrophe theory
Increased arousal leads to optimum performance. However, if cognitive and somatic anxiety are high there is a dramatic decline in performance.
Individual Zone of Optimal Functioning (IZOF)
IZOF is related to athletes being in their flow state which requires different levels of arousal for every person.
Achievement goal theory (AGT)
Motivation driven by goals. Divided into two categories task oriented: increased level of effort, reduced frustration and no fear of failure. Ego orientated athletes display lower levels of effort and attribute any failure to unstable sources
Attribution theory
This theory investigates what people attribute their failures and their success. They fall into one of three categories. Control is wether it was in your control. Causality is wether it comes from an internal or external factor. Finally, stability this is wether the reason is sable (permanent) or unstable (eg. illness)
Self determination theory
Suggests that athletes are motivated to change because of their own behaviour. Focuses on intrinsic motivation and assumes the athlete is actively directed towards growth.
