Question 1 What are the differences between sex, gender, and sexuality? Why do we make these distinctions? How does this link to ‘doing gender’? Flashcards
Sex
refers to the biological criteria that signify male or female, although there are more than two sexes, with at least three recognized
Gender refers
to the configurations of behaviors or activities involved in being masculine or feminine, a socially constructed idea of how people are supposed to behave based on how they look.
Sexuality
refers to who you are attracted to. We make these distinctions because while sex is often seen as biological, gender is understood as a social construct that varies across cultures and time.
This links to ‘doing gender’
which means that gender is not something one has but something one performs through interaction with others, ascribing to the predetermined roles society places on individuals.
