Question 1 (Antenatal screening) Flashcards
What is the background population risk of miscarriage?
Common, at least 10% for every pregnancy.
Maternal age important (10% at 25-29 years old, >50% when over 45 years old)
For young mothers under 20, and when dad is over 40, there is also increased risk.
What influence does one previous miscarriage have on Anna’s personal risk?
This can depend on why the miscarriage occurred, which is not usually information that we have. We tend to only investigate after 3 miscarriage when we call it ‘recurrent’.
at a population level, the good news is the majority of people who have had one miscarriage will go on to have a healthy pregnancy.
We think the risk of a second miscarriage is around 20%.
