Context
Big C: During this time, The Mongols needed a common task to ensure their unity and external resources to reward followers.
Expansion into China = source of great wealth
Little C: Mongol conquest of China was difficult and took place from 1209-1279
Mongols unified a divided China –> Mongols granted the Mandate of Heaven
Did not know how to govern an agricultural society so used Chinese Practices
Thesis
China went from complete Confucianism to a looser structure of it because the Mongols still wanted to remain harsh towards the Chinese. However, some Chinese philosophies and techniques remained the same.
Changes
No more civil service exams
Now it relied heavily of foreigners for administration
Women were given more freedom (no more foot binding and women further disobeyed Chinese gender philosophies by riding to hunts with their husbands)
