1. King Phillip II had been married to Queen Mary I and she died in 1558. He asked Elizabeth I to marry him in 1559 but she refused. King Phillip wanted to have the power of controlling England back.
2. Catholic people in Spain did not want Protestant Elizabeth I to be the queen. They plotted against the queen.
3. Spain supported Irish rebels.
4. Elizabeth secretly encouraged attacks on Spanish ships.
5. Elizabeth I helped rebels in Netherlands.

1. The leader of the Spanish Armada was Medina Sidonia a soldier not a sailor. He made erroneous judgments.
2. Spanish ships were big and difficult to steer whereas English ships were small and fast with better sailors. English had good commanders.
3. Spanish soldiers in Netherlands couldn’t join up with the Armada.
4. English sent fire ships into Calais harbour to scatter and attack the Spanish ships.
5. The Spanish Armada were forced to escape all the way around Britain past Ireland and they were battered by storms and wind. Some ships were tossed against the rocks and were destroyed.
