Quasi and natural experiments Flashcards
What is a natural/quasi experiment?
To investigate relationships between an IV and DV in situations where IV cannot be directly manipulated or where the IV is a trait of the participants
What is the advantage of a natural/quasi experiment
Allows research where ID can’t be manipulated the ethical or practical reasons and in able cycles is to study real problems
What the disadvantages of natural ?
Cannot demonstrate causal relationships because IV is not directly manipulated
less control of extraneous variables
can only be used where conditions vary naturally
participants may be aware of being studied
What are the advantages of a lab experiment
Well controlled
confounding variables can be minimised
can be easily replicated
What are the advantages of a field experiment?
Less artificial
usually higer mundane realism and
higher ecological validity
What are the weaknesses of a lab experiment
Artificial where participants may not behave naturally
investigate the effects and participant effects may reduce internal validity
What are the weaknesses of a failed experiment
Less control of extraneous variables, reduces internal validity
more time-consuming and expensive
Why is it it importance or results to be easily replicated in a lab experiment
It demonstrates external validity
Why is it important to minimise confounding variables in a lab experiment
It demonstrates higher internal validity
