Who was Kublai khan?

A

The grandson of Gengis khan who ruled china and lived in one of China’s palaces. He was the first foreigner to ever rule all china, and unified china for the first time in centuries. He also opened china up to trade and the Silk Road, which is how Marco Polo came to work for him for 17yrs. Kublai was tolerant of all religions. He knew he could not rule china alone, because his mentality was too different from that of the Chinese. To solve this, he hired non mongol officials.

What is the Mandate of Heaven?

A

The idea that if a ruler was ruling, he had the Mandate of Heaven. If his rule went “bad”, because he either abused his power or because floods ruined crops and plagues killed he had lost the Mandate of Heaven.

A

A gigantic wall surrounding part of northern china rebuilt three times. It’s construction killed many people from cold, hunger, exhaustion, or the wars going on around it.

A

A group of nomads living in Mongolia who were later unified by Gengis khan and who were viewed as barbarians by the Chinese.

A

A

The first man to ever unify mongols under his (or anyone’s) rule. He later conquered part of china by going around the Great Wall, and was kublai’s grandfather. He was a brilliant strategist, organizer, and a cruel leader. He practiced war psychology and lead Chinese styled, highly effective armies.

A

A

A Byzantine text made by Justinian. It contains the code, which is all of the laws Rome ever had that were still valid at the time, the digest,which quoted/summarized all of Rome’s greatest thinker’s philosophies, the institutes, which told law students how to use the laws, and the nobellae, which consisted of all roman laws made after 534.

What happened durning the Ming dynasty?

A

A time when china was the dominant power in Asia, and many counties sent it tributes. It was a time of peace following the end of mongol rule. The second of its emperors opened china up to foreign countries by sending explorers out. However, these expeditions cost a lot of money, and scholars believed the money to be better spent on defenses. So china withdrew into isolation.

A

What was the Song Dynasty?

A

A time when china tried to buy peace form their northern neighbors through tributes paid in silk, spices, and the like. This did not work very long. During this dynasty, economy grew and things like the typewriter, mechanical clock, gunpowder, paper money, and the compass were made.

A

A Chinese philosophy founded by Confucius that revolves around education and the five relationships; ruler/subject, father/son, older brother/younger brother, husband/wife, friend/friend. The ultimate concern is harmony in society.
