Traditional type of family structure.
Consists of two parents and their
children.
The nuclear family was long held in
esteem by society as being the ideal
in which to raise children.
Nuclear Family
Consists of two or more adults who are related, either by blood or
marriage, living in the same home.
May form due to financial difficulties or because older relatives are
unable to care for themselves alone.
Extended Family
Consists of one parent raising one or more
children on his own.
Considered as the biggest change society has
seen in terms of the changes in family
structures.
Single Parent
“The Forgotten Family”
Consists of a husband and wife living and
working together.
Pet ownership or extensive contact with their
nieces/nephews as a substitute for having
their own children.
Childless Family
Involves two separate families merging
into one new unit.
Consists of a new husband and wife and
their children from previous marriages or
relationships.
Tend to have more problems, such as
adjustment periods and discipline issues.
Stepfamily
This could be due to parents’ death, addiction,
abandonment or being unfit parents.
Many grandparents need to go back to work or
find additional sources of income to help raise
their grandchildren.
Grandparent Family
The accomplishments, beliefs, actions and
attitudes that are passed on from
generation to generation.
Family Legacy
Parents each bring their own family legacy to
the parenting table.
They may assume that there is a “best” way
to do things and any other choice is inferior.
Conflicting family
Legacy
