Quarks And Leptons Flashcards
What are hadrons?examples?
hadrons are things made out of quarks example = baryon or mesons
What are baryons?examples?
baryons are a subdivison of hadron, made from 3 quarks. examples= protons(uud), neutrons(udd), sigma(uus)
what are mesons?Examples?
mesons are a subdivision of hadrons, made of a quark & antiquark combination. example = pion(u + antidown) , kaon(d + antistrange)
What are Leptons?examples?
leptons are the other group to hadrons, not made out of quarks . they are fundamental particles. examples = electron , tau , muon
how do hadrons interact?
strong and weak interactions
where does strong nuclear force act?
very short range, only within the nucleus. act on hadrons and quarks responsible for holding the nucleus together attractive at larger ranges 1.2×10^-15 ->3×10^15
how do leptons react?
weak nuclear force
what is weak nuclear force?
acts on all particles, both leptons and quarks has a range less than 10^-17M is responsible for B decay responsible for interactions involving change of quark type
Which hadrons are stable?
protons are stable, longest half life
conservation rule for mass/energy?
energy cannot be created or destroyed
conservation rule for charge
charge is always conserved
conservation rule of lepton number?
lepton change before the branch is equal to lepton number after
conservation of strangeness?
in strong reaction, strangeness is always conserved
How does a muon decay?
muons are leptons so they decay via the weak interaction
What are quarks?
quarks are fundamental particles which make up hadrons(baryons and leptons)
