Quantum Theory Flashcards
Angular Momentum Quantum Number ( l )
Tells shape of the orbitals
Has values from 0 to n-1
n
Principal Quantum number. Correlates to distance from nucleus(Energy Level)
Magnetic Quantum Number (ml)
Describes orientation of the orbitals in space
Has values from -l to +l
Spin Quantum Number
Either -1/2 or +1/2
Pauli Exclusion Principle
No two electrons in the same atom can have the same four quantum numbers. If in the same orbital, they differ in their spin number.
Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle
It’s impossible to know both the momentum and position of a particle at the same time.
Who created the 4 Quantum Numbers?
Schrödinger
Quanta
Discreet Amounts of energy releases by atoms and molecules
What did Louis do Broglie do?
Created an equation to explain the wavelike nature of electrons.
(Wavelength)=(6.63x10^-34 J/sec)

(mass)(moving velocity)
Hund’s Rule
Place one electron in each orbital before placing a second one(with an opposite spin) in there
Aufbau Principle
As protons are added one by one to the nucleus to build up the elements, electrons are similarly added to atomic orbitals.
Exceptions to electronic configurations
Cu(4s1 3d10) &
Cr (4s1 3d5)
