Quantum Physics Flashcards
1
Q
What is the photoelectric effect?
A
Emission of electrons from the surface of a metal when photons are incident on the metal.
2
Q
What is 1 electronvolt?
A
The energy required to move an electron through a p.d of 1V.
3
Q
Define work function.
A
The minimum energy required to release an electron from the surface of a metal.
4
Q
Explain why a pattern is produced when electrons pass through graphite.
A
Electrons behave as a wave and can diffract.
When the wavelength of electrons is similar to the gap of the graphite, diffraction takes place.
The regular arrangement of atoms serves as a grating that causes interference of wavelengths to produce a pattern.
