Quantum Flashcards
Photoelectric effect
The emission of electrons from a metal surface when the surface is irradiated with electromagnetic radiation above the threshold frequency
Threshold frequency
fo is the minimum frequency of the incident radiation for the electron to escape
Work function energy
The
minimum amount of the energy necessary to remove an electron from the surface of the material
Stopping potential
The minimum retarding potential to
stop all the electrons from reaching the collector plate
Emission line spectrum
A series of separate, differently coloured lines on a dark background corresponding to the wavelengths of
electromagnetic radiation emitted by atoms when excited electrons in the atoms return to their ground states
Absorption line spectrum
The spectrum is produced when light from a hot body passes through a cooler gas; it appears as a series of
separate dark lines on a continuous spectrum
