Quantitative data collection Flashcards
What is interrater reliability?
consistency of observations reflected as a coefficient kappa (Cohens kappa)
What does COHEN’S KAPPA refer to?
interrater reliability in data collection
What is intervention fidelity?
consistency in data collection
What 2 things affect data consistency in quantitative data collection?
Intervention fidelity
interrater reliability
What does RELIABILITY of the measurement tool refer to?
the CONSISTENCY with which the instrument measures the concept of interest.
What are the 3 aspects of reliability ?
- Stability (test retest reliability)
- homogeneity (chronbachs alpha of 0.8 or bettter)
- interrater reliability
What is validity?
The extent to which an instrument actually measures or reflects the abstract construct
Why use control in a quantitative design?
to hold the conditions of the study uniform and impact of extraneous variables on the dependent variable
What are the necessary steps to controlling the treatment in an experiment?
- make detailed description of the treatment
2. use strategies to ensure consistency of implementation (same nurse, same equipment, same time)
What are the 4 ways to control extraneous variables?
- homogenous sampling
- data consistency
- Random selection/assignment
- Manipulation of independent variable
What is internal validity?
the extent to which the study findings are TRUE rather than the result of extraneous variables
*Factors within the study design
What is external validity?
the extent to which study findings can be generalized beyond the sample used in the study
6 factors that affect internal validity?
- maturation
- history
- Mortality
- Instrumentation
- testing
- selection bias
What are the 3 threats to external validity?
- selection effects (present in a NON random sample)
- reactive effects
- Measurement effects
What is the rosenthal effect?
self-fulfilling prophesy– behaviours of the participants change based on expectations and perceptions
