Quan- Cross-tabulation and chi-square Flashcards
Cross tabulation and chi-square can only use what variables?
categorical variables - Nominal and Ordinal
relationship is significant if relationship is less than -
0.5
Null hypothesis =
no relationship between iv and dv
Alternative hypothesis =
some relationship exists between iv and dv
probability
= mathematical likelihood of an event occurring
- measure using P values
uses statistical tests to assess whether differences exist or occurred by chance
Cross tabulation -
provides means to observe and measure a relationship between 2 categorical variables nominal and ordinal
- displays how data would look like if no relationship
- against how the data is actually is
Chi-square test for independence -
measure of the differences between the expected and actual values for every cell
- larger differences between 2 variables may indicate disproportionality - a statistical significant relationship
Bigger the discrepancy in Chi-square test =
bigger the chi-square value
Degrees of freedom within chi-square test -
controls the size of the table
sum of chi-square increases as the size of the table increases
- bigger table means more differences
- degree of freedom a way of controlling the number of cells in a table
