What is the PDSA model of quality imporvement?
Plan, do, study, act.
List and explain the 7 styles of leadership
- Great Man theory: suggests leaders are born, not made.
- Trait theory: people posses certain traits, that cannot be learnt
- Behavioural theory: focuses on the behaviour of the leader i.e. their concern for people.
- Contingency theory: being able to switch styles depending on the context of the situation.
- Transactional leadership: leader motivates by reward or punishment.
- Transformational leadership: people will follow a leader that inspires them through vision.
- Laissez-faire: make few decisions directly, rather allow team members to make decisions.
Define a near miss
An error not resulting in harm. A good learning opportunity.
Define neglect
Falling below the accepted standard.
Define poor performance
Problem of personal attitude, leading to failure to learn from mistakes and listen to advice, leading to affect on patient care.
Define misconduct
Deliberate harm, fraud, theft, improper relationships etc. Such as rough handling or carelessness.
Define lack of candour
Hiding our own or others’ mistakes, or ignoring them.
Define medical negligence.
A civil claim for damages, found liable but not guilty.
Define the four tests needed to prove medical negligence.
- Was there a duty of care?
- Was there a breach in the duty of care?
- Did the patient come to harm?
- Did the breach cause this harm?
What is the Bolam and Bolitho test?
Bolam - would a group of reasonable doctors do the same?
Bolitho - would it be reasonable of them to do so?
What is the standard of proof?
On probabilities i.e. over 50%
What costs can be awarded in a medical negligence claim?
- Loss of income.
- Cost of care.
- Pain and suffering.
