Quality Control Flashcards
Compare the three quality control mechanisms outlined by Weaver (2008)
In order to understand quality control, there are three approaches used.
These are FIRSTLY, CODES OF CONDUCT, which is the weakest level, and refers to itemized lists of recommended behaviour towards achieving sustainability that can apply to operators or tourists.
SECONDLY ARE CERTIFIED-BASED ECOLABLES, which is the strongest level, and relates to how an organization / operators complies with being honest, reliable and contestant.
FINALLY, AWARDS, which are an intermediate level of recognition, and are only awarded to one or two products, which does not reflect the organizations overall commitment to ecotourism.
What is the most effective quality control mechanism for demonstrating the professionalism and credibility of an ecotourism product?
The most effective form of quality control is that of certification as it relates to how businesses are committed to ensuring their activities have minimal impact on the environment and that travelers get an exciting and valuable experience. Therefore, tourists are generally only willing to experience ecotourism ventures or activities that display high standards of certification. For example, Kingfisher Bay Resort is an ecotourism leader as illustrated by its certifications, as it holds 9 advanced ecotourism certifications for both the accommodation and tours/activities it provides. As well it has just recently been awarded a Green Travel Leader certification
NOTE: Refer certification / Ecolable definition
Why is quality control important?
- To satisfy the demands of the ecotourism market
- To satisfy the ethical position and the aims of ecotourism to conduct business in a sustainable way
