First order problem solving aims to deal with the immediate problem in a way that minimises time away from the patient.
Second order problem solving is about changing the systems which allowed for the problem to occur in the first place.
Second order problem solving prevents the recurrence of error in the future whereas first order simply deals with the situation at hand.
