Qualitative Research Methods Flashcards
What is a non-participant observation?
A researcher sits and observes an activity in which that is structured with a coded observation schedule that directs what is to be observed
What is a participant observation?
Involves the sociologist immersing himself in the lifestyle of the group he or she wishes to study
What is an overt observation?
Respondent is aware they are being studied
What is a covert observation?
Respondent is unaware they are being studied
What do overt observations always require?
A gate keeper
What does Fielding (2004) argue about gate keepers?
That they are the unsung heroes of ethnography because they can speak to a group beforehand and allay their suspicions about the researcher
What does Marvasti (2004) say improves rapport?
Suggests that showing interest in the respondent’s culture and way of life simply helps build a rapport because people are often flattered by the attention
