Qualitative Research Flashcards
Characteristics of qualitative research
Data collected then theory formed
Research method evolves as more data is collected
Advantages qualitative research
Helps to build new theories easily
Doesn’t need large sample size
No strict design plan needed, can be improved through study
Disadvantages qualitative research
Results and success heavily dependent on researcher’s ability
Can’t generalise findings to general population
Time intensive
Sampling in qualitative research
Purposeful not random, so people chosen for specific criteria
Types of sampling: maximum variation(choose multiple perspectives) or homogenous (choose people with similar characteristics), snowball (participants refer friends, useful for hidden populations), expert sampling
Data saturation
Describes point when no new themes/topics are coming out of data
Size of qualitative sample determined by
Research question and saturation point
Data collection method
Research strategy (all data then analysis, or drop between the 2)
Logistical concerns e.g. money/time
Observation method of qualitative data collection +/-
+ What people do so no recall bias
- People act differently when observed
Interview method of qualitative data collection +/-
+Detailed info
- Labour intensive
- Interpretation can be difficult
Focus group method of qualitative data collection +/-
+ Quick information gathering and social consensus
- Needs skilled facilitator so everyone expresses viewpoints, not just 1 or 2
