Qualitative + Quantitative Flashcards
1
Q
What is qualitative data?
A
Qualitative data is non-numerical and descriptive. It provides detailed information about thoughts, feelings, and behaviours (e.g., interview transcripts, diary entries).
2
Q
Strengths of qualitative data
A
- rich, in-depth insight into participants’ thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
- high validity as reflects participants’ true experiences and behaviour in more natural and meaningful ways.
3
Q
Weaknesses of qualitative data
A
- hard to analyse—data is unstructured and subjective, making it difficult to summarise or compare.
- low reliability as Different researchers may interpret the same data in different ways, making it less consistent and more open to bias.
4
Q
What is quantitative data?
A
Quantitative data is numerical. It includes data that can be measured and statistically analysed (e.g., test scores, number of aggressive acts).
5
Q
Strength of quantitive data
A
- easy to analyse, compare, and summarise using graphs or statistics.
- high reliability because it’s objective and consistent—less open to researcher interpretation or bias.
6
Q
Weakness of quantitive data
A
- It lacks depth and may miss the true meaning behind behaviours or emotions.
- low val because it oversimplifies complex behaviours into numbers, which may not fully reflect the reality of human experience.
