Research administered survey.
Predetermined questions -> interview schedule.
Strict on content of interview and will not allow diversion to other topics.
Open or close ended questions.
Will not probe for details or clarifications on responses

Advantages of Structured Interview
Quick to administer
Collect data from large sample in short time
Less manpower cost
Disadvantages of Structured Interview
Low credibility (low internal validity) because questions are fixed, so answers may lack detail.
Semi-Structured Interview
Predetermined set of questions but allows subjects to deviate from interview schedule. May probe for details and clarifications on responses. Open or closed ended questions.
Semi-Structured Interview Format

Unstructured Interview
Guided conversation, no interview schedule. Participant is told the topic and encouraged to discuss their experience.
Will probe for details and clarifications on narrated experience.

Advantages of Unstructured Interview
Flexible
Detailed qualitative data
Higher credibility (internal validity)
Disadvantages of Unstructured Interview
Time consuming
High manpower and interview training cost.
Focus Group Interview
Semi structured, structured or unstructured.
Interviewer has a prominent role, poses specific questions to each participant in turns.
Use interview schedule.

No interviewer, researcher moderates the discussion, explains the topic and ground rules, then let’s group discuss. Can interject to keep group on task. No interview schedule.
