Qualitative Data Analysis Flashcards
what is the difference between inductive and deductive analysis?
- Inductive: from data to concepts. From interview data, cluster main points to concept.
- deductive: from given concepts, evaluate interview data e.g. for matching to concept.
How can we define Theme in context of qualitative analysis?
represents a pattern, topic and may relate to any aspect like behaviour, user group, places, etc.
What is affinity diagram? How is this technique conducted and for what?
technique to identifying themes and organise individual ideas into a hierarchy. Conduction: often let users pin post-its to given themes
interaction analysis
Analyse verbal and non-verbal interactions between humans and with objects
Grounded Theory:
* Definition
* Goal
* Analysis process
- Definition: process of deriving a conceptual abstraction by assigning general concepts(codes) to singular incidences in the data
- Goal: systematically derive a clear and testable hypothesis (well-grounded theory)
- Analysis process:
- *Open coding: discover categories (Knoten)
- Axial coding: systematically relate categories to each other to subcategories (Kanten)
- selective coding: refines categories into a larger theoretical scheme around one core category
What could be the criterias to relate the codes for the exial coding?
- Conditions: related to the phenomenon
- Actions: directed at handling the phenomenon
- Consequences: of handling related to the phenomenon
What should be done on the iterative part of axial coding?
Look for contradictions, expansions (new codes) and iterate until no more insights can be gained
What can be done to enhance the Trustworthiness of the results obtained by GT?
- Involve multiple people in the analysis
- get feedback from interviewer
- check for counter exmaples, contradictions
Name at least three questions you can use to „ask a text“ in open coding to identify concepts.
- when?
- How?
- Who?
