Q

what are the two different assumptions that need to be differentiated in the discussion?

A
  1. those who assume that the justification must be scientific and be grounded in a correspondence between the stated hypothetical proposition and observed events in the real world
  2. those who assume that the fundamental criterion for the justification of scientific arguments is ethical and political

simple term:

  1. those who advocate for the scientific model and
  2. those who advocate for the disregard of the scientific model due to how empirical data does not offer legitimacy to any theory about reality

Q

what is the difference between idiographic and nomothetic?

A

An idiographic study seeks to spend more time with an individual in order to learn about their unique personality.

In contrast, nomothetic study seeks to perform experiments and tests in order to gain data on personality traits that can be generalized to a larger population.

Q

what is discourse analysis?

Q

what are the conclusions of this reading?

A
  1. idiographic methods are used more intensively by Spanish and Portuguese speakers
  2. if researchers adopt multiple methods, then those methods must only be associated with a single methodological approach
  3. the more often one uses methods of one perspective, the less their tendency to use methods of another perspective (kay di sila sanay)
  4. social psychologists who use nomothetic-deductive designs and quantitative analysis techniques are associated with a positivist view of science that seeks objectivity
  5. social psychologists who prefer idiographic methods emphasize the understanding that the ultimate goal of social psychology is the recognition of the symbolic character of human action
  6. the proximity of certain
theoretical assumptions should not impose an obligation to assume an exclusive relationship with the methods that are customarily used by researchers from this approach
