quadratic curves Flashcards
what is a root?
the two points in a graph where the line crosses the x axis
how do we find a root?
you can find the roots of a quadratic curve by putting the expression equal to zero and solving the quadratic equation through factorising
what is the y intercept?
when a curve crosses the y axis
how do we find the y intercept?
the constant term of the equation y = ax² + bc + c. the intercept is at (0,c)
what is the turning point?
the highest/lowest point of the parabola. if the turning point is the highest point, it’s the maximum. if the turning point is the lowest point, it is called the minimum. the turning point is always halfway between the two roots.
how do we find the turning point?
if the x² value in the equation is negative then the curve will be inverted and the turning point will be a maximum. when we find the square (in the form y = ( x + p )² + q ) , (-p,q) is a minimum point and (p,q) is a maximum point
