A

Verbs that do not take objects e.g. he yawned, she ran

What is the difference between direct and indirect object

A

Direct object is the thing which changes location/ possession, often inanimate, does not come after the preposition e.g. “she gave the ball to Jack” the ball is the direct object.

Indirect object is the thing which receives the transferred entity, often animate and often comes after preposition e.g. “my mum sent me a birthday card” me is the indirect object

A

What are adverbials

A

A phrase which modifies the sentence, occupies a peripheral position in the sentence, can occur in either peripheral position.

E.g. On Tuesday we should have a picnic. Adverbial= on tuesday
With a bit of luck we will have good weather. Adverbial= with a bit of luck

What is the difference between an adverbial and a post modifier

A

Adverbials modify the verb, post modifiers modify the noun. They only modify the noun phrase not the entire sentence and they are not moveable, only coming after the noun e.g.
The man with the red hat followed me home. Post modifier=with the red hat
