qnbqnnnq Flashcards
What is ecology?
The study of an ecosystem
Define adaptation and provide an example.
Inherited abilities used to reproduce and survive
I.e: Fish fins
What is an ecosystem? Provide an example.
The relationship between living things and and non living things
Water and fish
Describe symbiosis and explain each of the following; mutualism, commensalism and parasitism.
Mutualism = both partners benefit Commensalism = one partner benefits and the other does not get harmed or benefit Parasitism = one partner benefits and the other gets harmed
What is sustainability and why is it important?
To be able to produce resources as fast as it is being used
Define ecological footprint.
The area of which a person uses energy and produces waste
What is the difference between something that is biotic and something that is abiotic?
Biotic = living Abiotic = non-living things
What is the difference between a producer and a consumer?
Producers make their own food, while consumers eat other organisms
What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
Food chains is one short food web, while food webs are full of food chains
Define scavenger and decomposer.
Scavenger seeks for food and eats animal matter, while decomposers absorb the nutrients and breaks the matter down
What is bioaccumulation? Provide an example.
When a pollutant enters the ecosystem and it affects the higher level consumers
Describe an animal that can act as a biological control.
Types of beetles that feed on weeds and pests
Provide an example of an indicator species.
A frog is not adapted to change
Describe the difference between primary and secondary succession.
Primary = organisms appearing in a bare area Secondary = organisms that appear in areas that already had organisms
What is an exotic or introduced species and why can they be harmful to other organisms?
It could risk the ecosystem
